Comparative evaluation of converter-based compensation schemes for VSC systems to achieve full-range active power transfer in very weak grids

Voltage source converter (VSC) is the expected core technology that supports power system de-carbonization by allowing renewable energy development. However, with increasing penetration of renewables and continuing decommissioning thermal generators, challenges integrating VSC-based systems into weak even very ac grids become apparent. Therefore, this paper presents theoretical analysis describing relationship between active transfer range grid factors generic VSC-grid system, aims to identify most effective way allow VSC exchange rated in both directions (±1 pu) grid. Thus, converter-based compensation presented extend operation boundary avoid voltage collapsing. Nevertheless, effects reactive current provision series compensations should be recognized; therefore, operational characteristics two arrangements, namely, shunt schemes, are comparatively evaluated. In extremely cases, cannot ensure a full targeted due inherent limitation, whilst can assist achieve full-range transfer. Effectiveness performance methods during reversal fault demonstrated typical grid, boundaries different schemes given.
